Life here in Kenya is slowly becoming more and more of just that: life. One of the major highlights of the week was the church picnic last Sunday. So much of what we've been talking about has been adjusting to a new culture, learning a new language, figuring out a new city, etc. . . . But, one thing we did figure out is that potlucks and church picnics are a pretty universal thing. Every fall, New City Nairobi has their annual church picnic, and it was a delight to partake in it. In fact, Karis and I were even put in charge of a game: "futbol" . . . not what you might think of as futbol (soccer), but it is actually a quite complex game that involves a lot of running. Surprising, as this is Kenya, champion of the marathon runners. Speaking of which, there is a marathon in Nairobi tomorrow; Karis and I decided that is not one we would want to run in . . . although it might be good for humility's sake. That being said, it was a joy to join in the afternoon festivities with the church body: a little musical chairs was in order, good old fashioned tug of war, and of course some real futbol. We are definitely making some wonderful Kenyan friends, so that has been a huge blessing.
Language school is still going, and we are certainly still beginners . . . beginners who are expert at getting our teacher to talk more about culture, and thus a bit less about language. Even though we are recent college graduates who are supposed to be tired of school, we come out of class excited to practice all our favorite phrases with anyone who will stop for a chat.
Lest you think everything is smooth sailing . . . I will mention that the public transport is still a bit intimidating. Our German friend Tini, has shown us the ropes with the matatu's, and this week it was my turn to get us safe and sound to Overcomers. We got there, but I am ashamed to admit that I didn't get us on the first possible one. With driving and life in general, assertive must be your middle name. I am swiftly figuring that out!
