Slice of life II (second try...still trying to figure this whole blog thing out!!)

It’s hard to believe two weeks have gone by! In terms of being here, it still feels like we are the “new kids on the block” and yet, in terms of when we were last in the US, it feels like an age . . .we are worlds away. J These last two weeks have flown by, and yet life’s pace is a lot different here. You plan to get one or two things done each day, while giving a lot of room for other things to happen. Flexibility is crucial and willingness to stop turn around and go a different direction makes life a little easier. For me, its always good to learn to be realistic with my time since I usually plan to do about 10 things too many in my day. Here is a brief summary of the things we have done since coming here:

Orientation with Robert and Lois (WHM Nairobi team leaders), shopped/set up apartment, visited various hospitals (making connections for Abby’s dental work), helped out with Overcomer’s by Grace*, attended New City Fellowship, Nairobi J J and the youth group, attended NCF women’s bible study, visited Ongata Rangai: helped out with women’s STD awareness talk and just played with kids J, hung out with women on the WHM team (including Kimberly and her roommate Cami) and started language classes! We are definitely still figuring out what life will look like here this next year . . .it is good to experience these little slices of life.

*Abby and I have the opportunity to help out weekly with Overcomer’s by Grace (OBG), a NCF ministry that provides a safe environment for the rehab and teaching of mentally challenged kids and adults. We are so excited about jumping into this ministry and the opportunity to work with some other incredible individuals from NCF. I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about this!

Language classes are going great. It’s fun (!!) to be back in the classroom and to be learning a new language. We walk to our school in the mornings, it’s about a 20 minute walk and its just the three of us (Abby, Rachel and I) with our teacher Robinson. Speaking of the 3 of us, our roommate, Rachel, a physician’s assistant from Texas, arrived safely this past week. Its good to have her around, spice up things a little--plus she is a great cook. J

Well that’s about all for now . . . for those of you who were wondering, our snailmail address is: PO. Box 76254, Nairobi 00508, Kenya.

More photos of the apartment and our area and life to come!!

Kwaherini!!

(goodbye, in the plural tense, since there are many of you J )
