Weddings happen in every culture. Shaving cream at weddings does not happen in every culture. Fortunately for us, shaving cream does happen at Kenyan weddings, at least at the wedding we attended on Saturday. We were excited to experience our first Kenyan wedding this past Saturday with the youth group. In the middle of the ceremony, the bride and groom got showered with shaving cream during a celebration part. That part of the wedding I followed... other parts not so much, as it wasn't even in English or Swahili (which we are still learning more and more of every day). It was certainly on the list of things we wanted to do during our time here, so we were ready for the day, bright and early that is. When I say day, I do indeed mean all day long. At first we wondered why we were leaving for a 10:30 AM wedding at 8 AM when Kenyan time is a bit more on the relaxed spectrum on things. We were told that we shouldn't expect the wedding to start until at least an hour after the start time. But, we soon found out that the wedding was a lot further away than we thought, and we did end up backtracking on several dirt roads in the country to get there. So, we certainly weren't as early as we anticipated, which was a good thing. The ceremony was long, and included the white dress, black tux, vows, special music and special dancing, intermittent standing up and clapping, and a momentary scare, as halfway during the ceremony, we (the new city youth) thought we might have to get up and perform. Thankfully, we managed to dodge that bullet, as we would have been far out-shined by another youth group's dancing routine. Overall, the day could be considered a success . . . except for the part where we thought we were in line for the food, and really the line had formed next to us . . . putting us near the end, near the end with no utensils left. Let's just say, we were glad to have attended our first Kenyan wedding.
